Friends of Horton Cemetery

The Friends of Horton Cemetery is a charitable organisation whose goal is to bring dignity and respect to the memory of the many tens of thousands of mental health patients, including war heroes, who died within the Epsom Cluster of asylums. Of those who died in these hospitals while they were in operation, 9,000 remain buried on a neglected piece of land in Surrey, England, their graves may now be unmarked but they are not forgotten.

On World Mental Health Day, Friends of Horton Cemetery in partnership with Out of Sight, Out of Mind and Horton Arts Centre, Epsom will bring recognition and dignity to pauper patients abandoned on derelict land in a free celebratory arts festival including:

  • 1pm-1.30pm – Ceremony of Commemoration, Horton Cemetery, KT19 8QG (parking in HooK Road Arena)
  • 2pm-3.30pm – Memorial Garden Unveiling with refreshments and creative celebrations (poems, music, dance and theatrical performances),  The Horton Arts Centre, Haven Way, Epsom, KT19 8NP

The Horton Art Club

The Horton are hosting a special evening event for World Mental Health Day on Tuesday 10 October at 8pma performance of “We Are What We Overcome” by Matt McGuinness.

Development of the show was supported by the Samaritans – who will be attending too.

The show is upbeat, honest and features a full live band but does deal with themes that may be a trigger to some people.

The Horton is offering a special subsidised group ticket for clients of MFT for £5 each. If you are interested in attending, please contact Christine, our Programme Manager, at christine@maryfrancestrust.org.uk

Below is the video trailer for the show.
